Its been really hot and dry. The combination of hot and dry can be really tough on crops. With conditions like these, we need to be on the look for Aspergillus Crown Rot in peanuts (we have seen it), Lesser Cornstalk Borers in peanuts, hot soil is scorching emerging plants in peanuts and cotton (we have seen it), and white mold in peanuts. I would probably recommend getting a head start on your white mold programs this year to help protect your crop. As far as plant stands go, we’ve had a few replants. Mostly from the heat scorching the plant as it emerges but there have been a few seedling disease and some planting depth problems. Dr. Whitaker said he’s been measuring at depths of 0.5″ and the thermometer is reading 120°F. If you’re considering a replant, contact Scott or me and we can help you with stand-counts to see if it will be worth it. Thrips damage increases when it’s hot and dry and we have definitely seen a lot of that. This is were your seed treatments really pay for themselves but once cotton reaches 4+ leaf stage it should be ok. Hold your heads high, focus on the positive and stay cool.
