We averaged about a 1.5 in. of rain across the county this week. From what I’ve seen, pigweeds have been a little harder to control in conventional cotton but strip-till cotton has seemed to be a leg up on the pigweed fight this year. Riding around it looks like we still have a bunch of cotton left to plant. Just keep in mind the June 5th date as the last day of plant for insurance. I have heard of some people dealing with seedling disease in cotton. Just know that once the furrow is closed there is nothing we can do from a chemical standpoint. Also, make sure that when you buy cotton seed that it has at least 85% germination. If it is not 85% then don’t buy it. Peanuts are looking good. I’ve had several weed calls for peanuts. Cadre will get wild turnips and Dual is about our best option for spiderwort if the spiderwort has not emerged yet. If spiderwort has emerged then you can add some Gramoxone to your PRE. For those of you who have newly planted pecan trees, we’ve been seeing budmoths attack the new foliage. Lorsban will knock them out and Intrepid will help provide some residual defense against the budmoth. Also, we have seen several new trees that are not putting out. The main cause of this is the diameter of the trees are too large to support the small root system they now have. We have been recommending to cut the larger diameter trees back to chest height. Hold your heads high, focus on the positive and stay cool.
