There are tons of available wheat varieties that you can choose from. If you go to our state wide variety testing site you can view their performance at all of our experiment stations. The UGA College of Agriculture tested many varieties from Rome to Tifton, and the data for 2024 can be viewed Here. Luckily for you our researchers went ahead and picked out several very good varieties for you to plant this winter.

If you choose a variety from the list or another source be sure of a few things. First, make sure it is a variety for the southeast. Being on the fall line we can plant both varieties suited to the piedmont and coastal plain, but I would not want to select a variety that only did well in Rome. Secondly with input costs being high and prices low, growers need to look for varieties that are resistant to hessian fly and that don’t require fungicides. Finally, pay attention to early season weed control to reduce competition and early season fertility for good tiller production.

WIth the lack of rain, you may not even be planning on any small grains this winter, but if you are this information should help you get off to a good start. If you want more information contact your County Agent.
