This week I have seen an increase in the number of stink bugs present in our cotton fields. We are also seeing numerous corn ear worm moths. Those moths are busy laying eggs. Make sure you are aware of how these pests affect your fields and treat accordingly.

Many growers are planting peanuts and some have started planted cotton. The weather has heated up and we have gotten very dry. With these conditions it is important to keep in mind the physiology of cotton.

It has been quite an unusual year. We have had good rainfall and few pest and disease issues thus far this growing season. But now we are beginning to encounter a pest that we do not normally pay any attention to in our area of the state. Whiteflies!

Cotton and soybean varieties with tolerance to auxin herbicides (2,4-D or dicamba) are being commercialized. Prior to making applications of dicamba to dicamba-tolerant cotton/soybean or 2,4-D to 2,4-D-tolerant cotton/soybeans in Georgia, growers will be required to attend the training “Using Pesticides Wisely”.
