Project SAFE (Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education) provides youth a place to develop a sense of belonging, learn teamwork in a safe environment and increase concentration skills. Georgia 4-H Project SAFE uses the shooting sports to teach many valuable life skills. Safety and the responsible use of firearms and archery equipment is a primary goal. Trained volunteers lead clubs in BB, Air Rifle, Air Pistol, 22 Rifle, Shotgun and Archery in over 110 counties.

Shooting Sports programs are available to youth of both gender and the youngest program starts with youth in 4th grade. The variety of the shooting program is great for youth, because as they age they can continue to explore other like areas in the sport as well as continue to master a certain discipline. Also, a major benefit other than shooting skills gained is the sense of belonging. Georgia 4-H shooting sports are designed like a team, so youth are able to make strong bonds with teammates and coaches through participating in the club. In fact, because there are competitions offered regionally, statewide, and nationwide youth are not only able to make friends within their community but around their state and perhaps nation too.

The great thing about shooting sports is they are primarily volunteer lead, which allows community members to get involved in sound community programming. It also offers a program that fits the direct needs of their youth. You will find that some counties offer several shooting sport teams while other counties only offer one discipline. To learn more about what your county currently offers I encourage you to reach out to your County Extension Agent or check out their website. Some local programs start SAFE sign-up for teens as early as November, while others start later. Keep in mind that if there is not a program being offered that you feel your youth would benefit from you can set up a meeting to learn how to start up a shooting club and what training is involved.

Military 4-H staff can help County 4-H staff get the word out about the SAFE Shooting Program as well communicate with county staff about youth interests or perspective volunteer leaders. Communication, collaboration, understanding youth’s interests, and great planning helps local and Military 4-H provide positive programming such as SAFE to youth.
