Communicating the science of farming and gardening to Jackson County

Farm injuries are most common in the summer months during production and harvest. Every day, nearly 100 agricultural workers suffer a lost-work-time accident. Fortunately, most farm injuries and fatalities are preventable if proper safety practices are followed.

One of the biggest dangers on a farm is misuse of heavy machinery. Always be alert and take precautions when using heavy equipment. Never adjust equipment that is still running.

Rollover of a tractor is a serious threat, so be sure to always wear your seatbelt, never allow extra riders on your tractor and do not dismount a tractor while it is still running.

If possible, when you are driving farm equipment on a county road, use a pilot vehicle to alert motorists and prevent accidents.

Safety practices are not limited to the farm. Power tools, mowers and chemicals used in lawns and gardens can pose serious dangers if not handled properly.

Make sure to wear proper clothing and protective wear (ex: long-pants, closed-toe shoes, ear plugs, glasses) when using this equipment. If you are using chemicals, always read the product label carefully and do not use more than the recommended amount.
