Students at Metter Elementary and Metter Middle School celebrated National Agriculture Week on Friday, March 24 at an Ag Day hosted by Candler County UGA Extension and MES and MMS Agriculture Teachers. Throughout the day, classes of students visited with exhibitors to learn more about agriculture in Georgia and locally in Candler County. 1,584 students participated in this event.

Pre-K through 2nd grade students planted seeds, met Smokey Bear, played farm games, drew agricultural chalk art, learned about gardens and salsa ingredients, petted donkeys and kangaroos and learned about blueberries.

3rd through 5th grade students completed a Farm Product Maze and farm loan activity, learned about water runoff, cotton, peanuts, electrical wiring and farm equipment. These students also attended a session hosted by the Mobile Dairy Classroom to watch a cow being milked.

6th through 8th graders learned about tractor safety, electricity, jams and jellies, floral design and welding. They completed an activity about wildlife and petted baby pigs and goats.

One highlight of the day was a live burn demonstration coordinated by the Georgia Forestry Commission, Metter Fire Department, and the Georgia Forestry Commission Air Attach Team. Students watched them light and then extinguish fire using a helicopter and airplane.
