The regional climate centers, including the Southeast Regional Climate Center which provides a variety of weather and climate data as well as other services, are due to be shut down on April 17 due to the significant budget cuts to NOAA and the move away from climate services. Funding for the centers is working its way through the NOAA and Department of Commerce administrations, but there is no certainty whether the funding will be restored or the centers will be permanently shut down at this point. The websites may continue to function but there will be no one to maintain them. I tend to use the Southeast and Midwest regional centers to access a lot of NOAA data that I use in my work and I know some of you do too. So be aware of this potential disruption to your access to the NOAA data that is likely to occur starting later this week. I have many friends in these centers and it makes me sad to see these cuts to a very helpful and inexpensive service supported by a very small federal budget.
