The latest monthly climate outlook for January 2025 was released earlier this week by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. It shows that colder than normal conditions are likely across most of the Southeast. Precipitation does not show a trend to wetter or drier than usual conditions and will be highly dependent on the development of storms like Gulf lows which may occur based on the location of where the coldest air goes. Some model runs indicate the chance of snow sometime in January but snowfall forecasts are generally not accurate more than a day or two ahead because they depend on very specific combinations of temperature and moisture that may not be predictable very far ahead. More on the forecast for the next couple of weeks in a separate post. No changes in drought status are expected over the next month other than some slight improvements over northern Alabama.
