Over the course of the day, Hurricane Beryl went from a tropical storm to a major hurricane and then to a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 130 mph and an impressive eye. It is expected to maintain this strength for a few days before weakening as it hits some wind shear in the western Caribbean. It may further weaken over the Yucutan Peninsula before re-entering the Bay of Campeche. After that, it may recurve to the north but is expected to hit Mexico or southern Texas rather than curving all the way back towards the Southeast. Another investigation just a little ways behind Beryl is also expected to become a named storm sometime in the next few days and should follow Beryl along a similar path. Another big wave is about to move off of Africa, and that could develop in the next couple of weeks as well. So if you have not finished your hurricane preparations, now is a good time to do it. Nothing to worry about for us in the Southeast so far, but keep watching because the season is just starting.
