Using new varieties that require less chill hours than traditional peaches, Florida farmers are starting to grow peaches as an alternative to citrus, which is being hampered by citrus greening and other problems. According to the story, only about 1,500 acres are currently in production, but that number is expected to grow in the future. Because of the long growing season and ample heat, peach trees mature quickly and come into production in just a couple of years.
