For what may be the first time ever, winter storm warnings from the National Weather Service have been issued for every county in Texas. The big storm is slowly gathering strength and will bring ice, frigid weather, and heavy snow to a large part of the United States this week. In fact, there are really two separate storm systems that will affect the country, although here in the Southeast they will mostly bring rain, except for northwestern Alabama. This is one of the most significant outbreaks since 1989, and reminds me of some of the big storms that occurred in the late 1970s. We climatologists are certainly to hear about how this storm shows that climate warming is not occurring, but wiser folk know that you can still have winter storms in winter, even in a warmer world, and that weather and climate are not the same thing.
