When I think of rice-growing, I envision water-filled paddies with rice stalks growing up out of the ponds. This has been a traditional way of growing rice which cuts down on weeds and makes soil nutrients available to the plants. But it also leads to the production of a lot of methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas. As populations continue to grow, more rice will be needed to feed the world in the future. But is there a way to grow it that uses less water and so produces less methane? Civil Eats published a story this week based on Project Drawdown recommendations for ways to produce rice effectively using much less water. You can read more about it here.
