I was interested in reading this story about the impacts of heavy rain on pollinating corn because I usually think of the impacts of too little water on corn, not too much. This year, the heavy rains that have been occurring over the Corn Belt have caused problems for pollination there. In particular, wet conditions at the time that the corn pollen sacks are opening can lead to overly tight wraps on the tassels, resulting in poor pollination and subsequent yield loss. This ear of corn illustrates the problem that resulted from heavy fog or rainfall — moisture that came at the wrong time and interrupted the pollination process. Notice the ear tip contains whitish colored kernels versus the yellow kernels in the body of the ear. The tip is almost 100% certain to drop off, says Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie.
