The latest Drought Monitor, released this morning, shows that drought expanded in every state in the region but decreased slightly in Puerto Rico. Note that Alabama is completely covered by dry conditions, although it is not all officially classified as drought at this point. The cutoff for this map was before the rain that hit our region yesterday, so I would expect to see some improvements on next week’s map due to the generous rain that most of the region. However, there was no rain in Virginia and only light rain in North Carolina, so we could see an increase in drought conditions there on next week’s map, although even those areas might get enough rain this weekend to keep the drought from expanding.
