An initial look at the rainfall patterns in February 2023 shows that most of the region was drier than normal, with just a few areas wetter than normal. The driest areas are found in the southern Florida Peninsula, where a significant part of the region received less than 25% of its normal rainfall except for the area near Miami. West Central Georgia was also quite dry, with precipitation amounts of less than 50% of normal in some counties. The wettest areas were in the coastal half of South Carolina and southeast Georgia plus some wet conditions along parts of the northern mountains and in central Alabama. When combined with the much hotter than normal temperatures we discussed yesterday, this shows the La Nina pattern of warmer and drier conditions in winter have occurred again this year as statistics predicted in spite of some short-lived very cold temperatures in late December.
