Hurricane Ian brought horrific winds and a storm surge of up to 18 feet in some places in southwestern Florida. But as it progressed across the Florida Peninsula, it also brought torrential rain that caused a lot of land and river flooding to an area that is almost flat. This means that any drainage of water from the area will be extremely slow, leading to waterlogged soils and potential root damage to trees and crops in the flooded fields.
