While we have been fairly wet here in the Southeast, in many other parts of the world they are experiencing much drier conditions and drought. Here is a story from Morning Ag Clips discussing the impacts of severe drought on crops in Spain and Portugal. I was surprised to read that there has been almost no rain at all for the last two months, since this is usually the time of year when those areas see fronts with rain moving through their countries. The result is that the reservoirs are at their lowest levels in decades and their groves of citrus and olive trees are in bad shape. Cereal crops for this year have already been lost. Competition between water users is fierce, with farmers requesting emergency allotments for their farms while ecologists are stressing the need to provide water to wildlife refuges, which are also severely affected by the lack of water. In the last three months of 2021, Spain recorded just 35% of the average rainfall it had seen during the same period from 1981 to 2010. But there has been almost no rain since then. (Photo by redcharlie on Unsplash)
