The Valdosta Daily Times posted a story this week about the state of the pecan harvest this year. It has taken some major hits in the past few years due to Irma in 2017 and Michael in 2018, and many growers are still recovering from those damaging storms. The dry conditions have caused a few issues for nut fill but overall producers are hopeful that this will be a better year. The big wildcard is the tropics, which are unusually active this year, with a pretty high probability that we will get hit by something in the next few weeks as we go through the main part of the hurricane season. Of course, we don’t know where any storms will go, so they could move west to Louisiana or Texas, or recurve out to sea instead of hitting the US mainland, but it is worrisome.
