The cloudy weather today in Athens is exciting after days of blue skies because it is a hint of things to come.  We are expecting rain for the first time in what seems like months (in some places, it literally IS months) over the next few days, and people are getting pumped up.  I am giving a talk on the drought tonight in Carrollton GA and will joke that they should have scheduled it two months ago since by the time I head for home the first drops may be falling.

You can read James Spann’s commentary on the upcoming weather at https://www.alabamawx.com/?p=107798.  If you are east of Alabama, of course, the timing will be a little different.  I’m not sure how well the weather forecast models are going to handle the rain because the ground is so dry the models can’t always handle thunderstorm development well, but we should definitely see some, and that will start to change the surface conditions for the next storm systems coming up later this week.

Keep an eye out for a chance of severe weather, and drive carefully!  Oil has built up on the roads for two months or more without washing off, so when those first drops hit, the road is going to be VERY slippery until we get enough to clear the oil off the road surfaces.
