Fox News reported on a recent research study which looked at the temperatures of 235 freshwater lakes around the world and noted that their temperatures were rising faster than those of the atmosphere or ocean.  This research was presented at the American Geophysical Union annual meeting in San Francisco last week.

The rising temperatures are putting the lakes under increasing stress, causing problems with water quality and ecosystem health in the lakes.  One of the consequences of this warming is expected to be an increase in algal blooms, including some species toxic to life.  This can lead to decreases in dissolved oxygen, which can create”dead zones” in the lakes and increase production of methane.  You can read the story here.
