To the east of Georgia and to the north of Florida lies South Carolina, our next stop on the tour of state climatology offices.  The South Carolina State Climatologist is Dr. Hope Mizzell, who was elected last week as the new President Elect of the American Association of State Climatologists.  She is assisted by a staff of three: Wes Tyler, the assistant state climatologist; Mark Malsick, the severe weather liaison,; and Jennifer Simmons, the climatology intern.  Like Georgia, the South Carolina State Climatology Office is in a state agency, the Department of Natural Resources, rather than in a university like Florida’s climate office. You can find their web site at https://www.dnr.sc.gov/climate/sco/.

Like the other state climate offices in the region, the staff in SC are willing and eager to help with data requests.  Dr. Mizzell is also very busy doing community outreach as well as serving on numerous state committees.  Unlike the other states in the region, SC does not do a monthly climate summary but instead publishes an entertaining weekly climate summary usually written by Wes Tyler, which brings a lot of attention to the office.  Be sure to check out their web site and the resources found there.
