While the last couple of weeks have been very dry, they have followed a wet April.  For the year to date, most of the Southeast is fairly close to normal in both temperature and precipitation.  By comparison the West Coast has been much hotter and drier than normal and the Northeast has been cold and dry.  Texas has been cool and wet.  Of course, as farmers know, averages don’t tell the whole story.  The distribution of rainfall can also be important, and is much harder to describe using climatological maps like these.

You can look at more of these climate summary maps as well as zoom in to the Southeast at the High Plains Regional Climate Center’s web site https://www.hprcc.unl.edu/maps/current/.
