Atlantic magazine had an interesting entry in their CityLab blog on temperature extremes in the US this week.  The article pointed out that in most year, extremes of cold or warm dominate the country as a whole.   However, this year there have been a nearly equal number of record hot and cold temperatures due to the high amplitude wave pattern which brought high pressure, drought and hot conditions to the western US and cool and dry conditions to most of the East.  Scientists are still determining the ultimate cause of the unusual weather pattern but some link it to unusually warm water in the Gulf of Alaska.  To read the article, click here.
