A website from UGA Cooperative Extension

We are so fortunate to be in Worth County, where agriculture is the heart of our community and county economy. Worth County Extension would like to recognize our farmers! Thank you for producing food and fiber, not only for us, but for those all around our country and further. Farmers have a great impact for all of us, and many times do not get the recognition that they deserve. They spend long days and many hours preparing the land, planting the crop, managing pests, and harvesting the products of the farm. Facing many challenges and obstacles, they continue on with persistence and resilience.

I was in a county agent training this week, and Dr. Stanley Culpepper shared a slide that shows the number of farms in the United States. Two hundred years ago, there was 1 farmer for every ~5 Americans; in 1920, 1 farmer for every ~10 Americans; in 1980, 1 farmer for every ~75 Americans; and now, 1 farmer for every 169 Americans. This shows that there are fewer farmers providing for more and more people. We rely on farmers to produce the food we eat, the clothing we wear, the building materials for shelter, and the economic well being of our communities. This week is a time to recognize our farmers in Worth County, in Georgia, and in our nation.

Support our farmers and farm families. Remember the importance of agriculture in our community. Thank a farmer, today.
