  • Weekly County Update 9/11/2020

Peanuts: So far peanuts planted mid-April to May are tracking on time. We have been forecasted a good bit of rain over the next several days. Those who are at least 2+ weeks out may want to consider a fungicide application to help stave off white mold, peanut rust, and leaf-spot. On dryland fields, we…

  • Peanuts: Middle April and May peanuts are still tracking on schedule. I will not be checking peanuts on Labor Day. Be mindful of white mold and peanut rust. I’m finding some Velvet bean Caterpillars (VBC). They are easy to kill but they have a huge appetite and can strip a peanut plant quickly. The threshold…

  • Cotton: Boll rot is in every field I go into. We currently have 4 types across the southern part of the state. Colletotrichum and Diplodia boll rot seem most common while bacterial boll rot and Phytophthora boll rot are the least common. • Seeds from China

Seeds from China are a real thing. If you receive any seeds from China please keep the seeds sealed in the bag they came in and it also wouldn’t hurt to put the bag inside another sandwich/zip-lock bag for more protection. Do not throw the seeds away, discard or open.

  • Pecan Thinning

We have a very large pecan crop this year. This is normal the second year following a hurricane. Fruit thinning is encouraged when 70% or more terminals have nuts. Right now, we have 90-100% terminals on most orchards and varieties. Trees cannot fill out this crop, and also this size crop can push our crop…
