Peanuts: Tobacco budworms have been found in a few fields but the threshold has been low. My count was 1 caterpillar per 3ft of row and we need at least 4 caterpillars per row foot to trigger a spray. We’ll continue to watch for them over the next few weeks. The fields I looked at lead me to believe that they may have cycled out. I know that it’s hard to look at peanuts that have been chewed on but peanuts can take a pretty good lick this early in the game and not lose any yield potential. I have started to see some Tomato Spotted Wilt (TSWV) show up and more cases of crown rot. Most peanuts are due to start fungicide programs. I would consider some white mold protection with the first spray because we have some favorable conditions for early-season white mold.

Corn: Southern corn rust has been found in Tift County. If you have sprayed a fungicide within the past 3 weeks, I would monitor my fields. If you haven’t and depending on what stage the corn is at, I would start thinking about spraying. If southern rust hits your corn before the dough/dent stage it can cause yield loss. Conditions are right for it to spread. In a matter of 5 days, it has popped up in Coffee, Colquitt, and now Tift.

Cotton: Cotton is looking pretty good. Most of what I looked at his week is coming out of some thrips injury and really taking off. A good bit of the cotton around the county is starting to square and I know some Pix is going out. Aphid activity hasn’t been really strong yet and little to no whiteflies. I did hear that whiteflies are starting to populate in some Kale so it’s only a matter of time.
