I’ve been working this week on planning research trials for next year. We should have some pretty exciting things coming with variety trials and some precision ag work. Potentially, we’ll be looking at boom spreaders versus broadcast spreaders for fertilizer applications, some cotton planting differences to help with boll rot, sprayer nozzles, peanut seeding depths, and planter downforce. I don’t know what’s going on in the pecan market. We have a good crop this year but the market doesn’t reflect it. The tariffs and COVID are a big factor but the early crop isn’t helping the price either. The higher corn prices and harvest time in the Midwest have made the cattle market dive some. There was a good bit of volume in the November market and had it trending up slightly. Hopefully, we might see it rebound some in November feeders. Keep your eye on cotton and your fingers crossed, it’s in the 70s. When they figure out how much damage was done to cotton in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama from the hurricanes then that number may change.
Fall Livestock Show is this Saturday, 10/24/20, at the Multipurpose Livestock Building behind the Extension Office. Come out and support our kids with their livestock projects. Cattle, Lambs, and Goats will show Saturday morning. Chickens and rabbits will show around lunch and the pig show will be at 6:00 pm that night. If you would like to take your chances of buying a pig, come on next Tuesday (10/27) to the pig sale. You can help support the kid’s projects and fill your freezer with some good home raised pork.
