Recipe is the same as last week:

  • 12 oz/acre tribufos (Folex/Def) (OR a PPO herbicide) +
  • 42 oz/acre ethephon (Prep/Super Boll/Setup) – assuming there are still bolls to open

OR

  • 6-8 oz/acre Ginstar/Cutout/Adios +
  • 42 oz/acre ethephon (Prep/Super Boll/Setup)- assuming there are still bolls to open

This week, a key consideration is the possibility of mid-week rain. Keep in mind what I’ve mentioned in previous weeks: sunshine and warm weather help defoliants work effectively. After this rain, temperatures are expected to drop, which means defoliants will likely take longer to show results. Realistically, we aren’t making much progress on this crop anymore, so it’s time to “get after it” if you haven’t already. Additionally, I’ve discussed with some of you the issue of seed weights being off, which is expected given this year’s challenging conditions. Extreme heat is the first factor that can affect seed weight. Drought can also impact seed counts. Moreover, we all witnessed what happened a few weeks ago when seeds began to germinate in the burr, which certainly reduces seed weight. Overall, it seems that we faced a perfect storm for a difficult seed year, so it’s something to keep in mind.
