Yay, rain!
Cotton: Big question this week has been Pix. Some love it and some don’t. Pix varies from field to field as you have to consider crop age, variety, amount of water, amount of fertilizer, etc. Pix does not cause the plant to produce flowers or bolls, it limits vegetative growth which enhances fruit retention. Its best to check the height to node ratio (HNR) and internode length of node 3 & 4 and 4 & 5 from the top. Those numbers will give you a good idea of the plants vigor. Average HNR for irrigated cotton should be around 2″.
Peanuts: Looking good but starting to see some more white mold. We’ll get some hits here and there, but we don’t want it running or getting underground. This is where timely fungicide applications help. The contained white mold should be no bigger than a dinner plate. If it’s larger than that, we need to look at fungicide, rate, and time of application. Some false white mold is popping up. It will scare you, but it’s harmless and usually found in reduced tillage fields. Not much on leafspot, but getting several calls about tank mixes with PGRs. There are a million combinations, and most will probably give some leave burn. It is a good practice to add a nitrogen source, spray grade Ammonium Sulfate (1lb/A), or UAN (1 pt/A). Depending on what you add to it, you may or may not need crop oil. Fungicides are a common tank partner that would remove the need for crop oil. PGR needs at least 6 hours before rain.
