Get your jackets out, it’s supposed to be quite chilly tomorrow (Friday) morning. Don’t forget time changes on Saturday night.

The Farmer Appreciation Dinner will be held on November 29th at 6:30 pm here at the Multipurpose Barn behind the Extension Office. Mrs. Cathy emailed the invites out this week. Sam Gay will be cooking. Please RSVP to the Chamber of Commerce. 229-382-6200 OR LFLOYDE@TIFTONCHAMBER.ORG

Cotton: A freeze event is not imminent but it’s getting closer and closer. Unless a weather event blows in, our estimated first frost is looking like somewhere after Thanksgiving. Keep in mind that weather stations typically measure temperature from several feet in the air which is a good bit above the canopy. The temperature lower in the canopy is usually a few degrees warmer. Wind also helps mitigate damage from frost. Usually, a freeze only impacts the immature cotton. If you’re spraying cotton this week you can probably leave the Dropp off, once it gets below 65 degrees it isn’t worth using it. Bump the Folex up to a pint and max out the Prep. Ginstar and ET are working well too.

Nematodes: If you pull yearly nematode samples, now is the time to do it and get on it pretty soon. As the temperature drops the nematodes move further down in the soil. If you wait too long and they move down it will give you a false nematode count. It all depends on how deep the samples are taken.

Peanuts: Peanuts are all but finished up and it’s taking a while to pick what is left. This weather and upcoming time change are pushing picking back into the afternoon.
