Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s a time to highlight the importance of mental health for everybody—young, old, children, adults.  Mental health is key for overall well-being at every stage of life. Regardless of age, background, or experience, making good mental health a priority strengthens individuals, families, and communities.

Sometimes people can feel uncomfortable talking about mental health. The word can feel scary, like we’re talking about being “crazy.”  But talking about mental health is no different than talking about heart health or kidney health. The brain is an organ of the body, and needs to be healthy.

In fact, physical and mental health are very interconnected. Taking care of one supports the other. Did you know that depression and anxiety increase the risk of other illnesses like heart disease and diabetes?  When you take care of your stress levels and your emotions it makes your body physically stronger too.

So this Mental Health Awareness month, think about one way you can take better care of your mind. More sleep, a little relaxation, spending time with others—it’s all good for your mind and your body.

This month would be a great time to think about who makes your life meaningful, who inspires you, who brings joy to your life—and then connect with them. Connection is a big part of having good mental health. Reach out–it will make both of you feel healthier, and keep you thriving!
