It was my birthday this week, and a big number birthday. Those of you who have been reading my blog know that I lost my parents about 3 months ago, so this was my first birthday without them. I spent a lot of time being wistful and reminiscing, and during the week I’ve realized that what I am remembering about them with the most joy and fondness are the little moments.
This is particularly true when I think about my dad. His quick hugs and pithy advice during rough times helped a lot, usually in less than 30 seconds. His favorite sayings when something had upset me were “Think of it as an adventure!” and “But can you see the humor in the situation?” My dad wasn’t a farmer, but he worked almost all the time, so those 30-second moments of love meant a lot. They mattered.
When we have huge and time-consuming jobs like farming, it can be easy to feel bad about not having more time for family. There’s no time for 2 weeks at the beach, or a trip to Disneyworld, and that can make us feel like we’re not giving enough. We can feel stress, and feel inadequate.
But honestly, it’s the little moments that add up. They matter. Each little memory is a piece of a bigger picture, kind of like a mosaic. Five minutes of playing catch, two minutes listening to a favorite song together, even a 30-second hug. Together they turn into something lovely and unforgettable. Sort of like this.
So, I’m going to try to not stress out when I don’t have huge chunks of time for those I love. Instead, I’m going to find little moments and make them as special as I can. Maybe, I’ll even think of it as an adventure.
Who’s with me?
