Next week there will be two opportunities to gain some new ideas and techniques for working with youth in virtual settings.  Michelle Cummings of Training Wheels will conduct two one-hour trainings to help you connect with your audience and to help you understand better what they are learning after you conduct your virtual programs with them.

If you have never attended a Michelle Cummings presentation I highly recommend you or your staff to attend. I attend her trainings whenever I have the opportunity. In fact, a few years ago I worked with her team to present at one of the 4-H Military Teen Leadership Summits. Her staff worked with the teens to get them working together and helped them to connect. Again, I am so happy that National 4-H is organizing this opportunity and feel confident you will find this opportunity beneficial.

The first workshop will take place for one hour on Tuesday, February 16th at 11:00 a.m. EST.

Connection Before Content

The research and best practice literature tell us that for positive youth development to take place, it is essential that strong relationships are built between caring adults and the youth we teach and serve. We must be welcoming and work on community building right from the start of our sessions with 4-Hers. This workshop will provide instruction on how to connect with a variety of fun games and activities that can be done easily in the virtual settings we find ourselves in (as well as in person when or if you have those opportunities).

The second workshop will take place for one hour on Thursday, February 18th at 11:00 a.m. EST

Reflecting on Results:  Activities and Strategies that can be used for Qualitative Research and Evaluation

Reflection helps learners make connections between their educational experiences and real life, as well as future learning. It helps youths realize that they can apply the lessons they learn and skills they use in a virtual or live experiential session to real life issues such as resolving a conflict with friends, figuring out an action plan or finding the solution to a problem. Processing helps create purpose, meaning and focus of an activity. Reflecting on what was presented and how participants react and plan to apply lessons learned can also provide rich qualitative data to teachers on the impacts of their programs.  Creative reflection activities can assist in identifying strengths of the content and delivery in connecting with the learners as well as identify possible areas for improvement. A series of reflection activities that you can easily use in your programs immediately will be covered.
