Base staff leadership and front line staff if you have not already conducted an introduction to 4-H lesson for your school-age or youth program members I encourage you to do so. It is important for youth to understand the larger club they are apart of, understand the meaning of the motto “to make the best better”, and build a connection for belonging with their fellow club members. Georgia 4-H has released two NEW resources to introduce youth to 4-H for this school year. One resource is for face-to-face instruction and the other is for virtually engaging youth.

Face-to-Face Lesson Highlights:

  1. Adaptable
  2. Great videos to augment teacher instruction
  3. The time-frame is 45 minutes and includes an extension activity for those with longer club meetings

Virtual Lesson Highlights:

  1. Adaptable
  2. Includes great videos
  3. Uses interactive features like google classroom and google forms
  4. Links can be shared via social media, added to your website, and publicized in parent newsletters for families to participate at home when they are available

Notes from the 4-H Military Liaison:

The provided lesson plans were designed for the educational classroom (primarily 5th-grade classrooms), so you will notice the term teacher is referenced throughout the documents. Please know that teachers and all educators inside and outside the classroom are welcome to use this resource. There is an expectation that staff will have an understanding of google classroom and google sheets to conduct the lessons. There are some resources included in the guide to help support staff with these apps; however, if staff members need further training please contact Laura Goss at laurwalt@uga.edu. Remember, I am here to support you, your staff, and your participants. Also, I have included a virtual copy of the Friends magazine in the online folder for staff to access. The Introduction to 4-H magazine is a great tool for staff to learn background knowledge on 4-H and is a great tool for youth to use during the lesson. I am currently working on getting the Friends Magazine out to some partners, but please note we had limited funds this year for printing the magazines. Please feel free to share with families electronically or in paper form.

Lastly, to access other resources please check out this Google Drive Folder. Some of you might recognize this resource as I shared it this summer. I will plan to upload more resources soon to this folder, so stay tuned for more great resources hitting your “cyber folders”! I have a few targeted lessons/training from Fort Gordon I am working on next, so if anyone else has specific needs please let me know. I am always happy to look for or create items to best support the team.

Thankful that our partnership allows us to support more awesome youth from across the state!
