State Council is the annual state meeting for high school 4-H’ers. This event is an opportunity for teens from all over the state to get together socially as well as provides teens with educational leadership opportunities.

A key component of the event is the election of State 4-H Officers. It is important that active 4-H members elect teens to represent them at the state level so that programming represents current teens needs and interests. Officers also serve a vital role in representing 4-H members at major donor events, at the capitol with legislators, and statewide 4-H events. Any active 4-H member can run to be a state officer, but they must be at State Council in order to run for office. Youth interested in running should speak to their local county extension office.

Throughout the weekend teens attend interactive classes that range from leadership development, healthy living, community service, and other educational topics. Classes are taught by educators as well as teens. Teens can apply to teach classes through their local office. Teaching is a great learning opportunity for youth and is a great experience to list on college applications.

Of course, all events need a little fun too! A long-standing tradition of this event is the Iron Clover Competition. Georgia 4-H is divided into 4 districts, so teens compete within their district. Competitions have included volleyball, tug of war, swimming, trivia, kickball, relay races, and other fun events. Youth sign up for one activity to compete in. Another fun activity that occurs both nights is a dance by the Rock Eagle Lake. Georgia 4-H hires a dj for the evening of fun. Music ranges from country, hip hop, 90’s music, line dances, and current chart hits. The dance is a highlight of the weekend for many.

Base staff is encouraged to promote this educational and fun event to teens who are entering 9th grade through graduating seniors. Contact your local office or a military staff 4-H member to learn about the 2019 State Council plans. Registration for this event will open soon. As of 4/18 the state council webpage had not been updated; however, when promotion materials are updated they will be posted on this page: https://georgia4h.org/programs/focus-areas/citizenship/community-global-affairs/state-council/

We hope to see our amazing military 4-H’ers at Rock Eagle 4-H Center this summer!
