A website from UGA Cooperative Extension

As all of our students are now back in school and we are gearing up for a great new year in 4-H, I wanted to take a minute to look back on our 2018-2019 program year at the amazing accomplishments of our youth and volunteers. As you can see in the images above, Gordon County 4-H had an incredible year last year. Twelve 4-H’ers attended 4-H State Congress, and we had 8 state winners recognized at the annual banquet there. We had a district senior board officer, and a newly elected district junior board officer, along with multiple other students participating in statewide programs. We reached over 1700 youth just in Gordon County, and also hosted area events that were attended by 4-H’ers from all over north Georgia. We appreciate the over 1600 hours of service from our volunteers; we couldn’t have such a great year without you!

I’m also so very excited about kicking off our 2019-2020 program year, with several new programs and changes, including:

  • Project Achievement emphasis – we will be working to strengthen our Project Achievement program by:
    • Providing workshops for Project Achievement at the schools as allowed
    • Automatic eligibility for rewards trip for those that compete
    • Early sign-up period for camp for those that compete
  • No Bulldog Bucks program this year; instead:
    • If you attend Project Achievement, you automatically are eligible to attend our summer rewards trip
    • Outstanding 4-H’er of the Year for each age division will be decided upon an application and interview process
  • Parent meetings will be held once a month while 4-H’ers are at County Council; youth will be in the pavilion and adults will be with Mrs. Allie at the auditorium
  • Senior Club meetings will not be in schools, but will be designated for a time and location for all high-schoolers to meet at the same time outside of school
  • Microsoft Tech Changemakers program – youth will teach adults how to use technology through this new program
  • 4-H robotics teams in several of our elementary schools
  • Officer Committees – each of our officers can choose to have a committee and recruit other 4-H’ers to assist them in their jobs, including planning the awards ceremony, serving as 4-H ambassadors, designing 4-H programs, planning County Council, and promoting Gordon County 4-H. If you or your child would be interested in serving on one of these committees, please let me know and I will pass it along to the respective officer.

Our 4-H Open House will be on Tuesday, September 17 at 6 PM. All of our 4-H programs will be represented and we plan to have all dates and information for each program available at that time. We also will have refreshments  and entertainment. There will be more reminders of this event, but go ahead and mark your calendars!

If you have any questions about any of this information or the changes, or want to get involved in any of these programs mentioned, please let me know at allie723@uga.edu or at 706-629-8685.
