Master Gardener Extension Volunteer Program

About

The Georgia Master Gardener Extension Volunteer (MGEV) Program connects UGA Extension, plant enthusiasts, and communities across the state. MGEVs share UGA Extension consumer horticulture programming about selection and care of plants for ornamental value, recreation, and home food production. Master Gardeners teach community members how to use plants and gardening to improve their environment, personal health, and quality of life.

Master Gardener Volunteers must attend 42 hours of in-class education and 50 hours of volunteer service in order to earn their title. Each year following, there is a requirement of 10 hours of continuing education and 25 hours of volunteer service to retain the title. These Volunteers are well trained and offer educational programs focusing on Home Lawn, Gardens, and Landscaping.

Glynn County is home to a Master Gardener program. Projects that the Glynn MGEV have worked on include 4-H Garden Club (open to all 4th-12th grade students in Glynn or McIntosh), Meet Me in the Garden (see below), Starting and Maintaining the Madge Merritt 4-H Teaching Garden, Establishing a Garden Club at Hand in Hand (tiny homes for the Glynn residents who are experiencing homelessness), Running a “Friends” program for others to volunteer alongside the MGEV, and more! These volunteers also put in great effort to help homeowners answer their individual questions by performing site visits or responding to calls/emails that come into the Extension Office.

Meet Me in the Garden

Each month, join the Glynn County Master Gardener Volunteers on the first Saturday from 10:00AM-12:00AM. At this event, they will share a brief presentation on a selected topic, provide a tour of projects they are working on in the Madge Merritt 4-H Teaching Garden, and open the floor for questions you may have about your own lawn and garden.

The garden is located at 325 Old Jesup Rd in Brunswick, GA. If you have any questions, feel free to call 912-554-7577 or email mchalbrook@uga.edu

If you are interested in learning how to start a garden, how to garden better, or coastal gardening specifics check out these other resources.

  1. Monthly on the First Saturday, 10:00AM-Noon we host a program called “Meet Me in the Garden” at the Glynn Extension office (325 Old Jesup Rd, Brunswick).
    • At this event, you will learn a lesson/skill from one of our Master Gardener Volunteers and be able to tour the garden.
    • Here you can ask questions about projects they are working on in the garden and more.
  2. Join our “Friends of the Master Gardeners” group. They meet weekly on Tuesdays.
    • 9 AM in the summer
    • 1 PM in winter
    • This is also a volunteer position where you would help with maintaining the garden and harvesting produce.
    • Because this is a volunteer position, there is some paperwork you would need to fill out and during a meeting with our Ag Agent, M.C. Halbrook, before you start working in the garden regularly.
    • Schedule a meeting: book time, email mchalbrook@uga.edu, text 912-580-0256, call 912-554-7577
  3. Sign up for our monthly newsletter to receive updates on other programs available to you.
  4.  Review hundreds of publications that we have available, stylized and written so that the information is easy to understand. These cover many topics of agriculture, so search keywords for the topics you are interested in learning more about. We recommend starting with our Home Gardening publications!
