Stick insects are masters at camouflage and you might not know they are in your landscape. If fact, this is the first time in years I have seen one, although they are not uncommon. Stick insects can be over 5 inches in length (with their antennae making up half), are wingless, and move slow. Since they can remain motionless for long periods, they can imitate plant parts and escape their predators. I found this little guy at a playground on one of the benches. They are harmless to humans and although they eat leaves, populations are not high enough to damage plants or crops. If you are looking for a unique pet, this could be an option.
