Cotton

The frequent rains and foggy mornings we have had in the past few weeks have created the perfect conditions for boll rot in cotton fields. There are four kinds of boll rot that have been confirmed in Georgia this season. The four rots are diplodia, colletotrichum, bacterial, and phytopthra. I have seen mostly colletotrichum and a little bit of diplodia in our area. Bacterial and phytopthra are less common, but have been observed in several places across the state. There is not an effective fungicide treatment for any of these diseases. The most susceptible bolls are the lower positions shaded by dense canopies that are unable to dry out during the day.

Peanut

The wet conditions have also caused white mold and leaf spot to explode in peanuts. Peanut rust has also been confirmed in southwest Georgia. It is very important to make timely fungicide applications and may be necessary to spray a few days earlier to hold back white mold under such heavy pressure. Using 20-30 gallons of water per acre might be needed to get the fungicide down to through the canopy.
