  • NOAA released their latest monthly global climate summary today, covering January 2016.  The analysis shows that January 2016 was the warmest on record by far, going back to 1880, beating the old record from 2007 by almost 0.3 degrees.  It is also the 9th month in a row to set a record for the globe. …

  • William Schmitz of the Southeast Regional Climate Center put together a scorecard of how the rainfall conditions this winter (December to February to date) compare to previous strong El Niño events.  You can see the scorecard at https://www.sercc.com/ElNinoRainScorecard.pdf.  The scorecard shows that the 1997-98 event set records across the region for the wettest DJF on record.…

  • NOAA released their summary of climate conditions for January 2016 this morning.  You can read the summary at https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/summary-info/national/201601, with a link to the full report coming out later this week.  They noted that this is the lowest amount of drought in the contiguous US since 2010.
