An experimental product by NOAA scientists was used to create a map of estimated freezing rain coverage that occurred in the storm that just occurred a few days ago. The map of ice shows the huge extent of freezing rain that occurred in the storm, including the freezing rain that occurred in the Southeast as warm air rode over a wedge of cold air moving down the east side of the Southern Appalachians. According to LinkedIn comments, “Over the span of 54 hours, this ice storm has led to major impacts. Northern MS, southwestern AR, and southeastern OK saw ice accumulation possibly surpassing 1 inch. Just east of Oxford, MS the max estimated ice accumulation was 1.24 inches!
