In conjunction with the NOAA climate report released today, NOAA has provided a report on nuisance flooding at coastal stations along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts based on their coastal data sets. Nuisance flooding is minor coastal flooding driven by higher than normal tides coupled with unusually storm weather, not major flooding from storm surges.
The report looks at the number of nuisance flood days in 2013 and 2014 and provides a prediction for what to expect in 2015 based on long-term trends along with the impacts of the current El Nino. The report finds that the number of days with nuisance flooding is likely to increase in the Mid-Atlantic states this year but is expected to generally decrease slightly along the South Carolina and Georgia coasts.
