The eastern parts of North and South Carolina and Virginia have been missed by a lot of the recent rains, and so an area of moderate (D1) drought has developed in parts of that region. Since they were so wet last year, it has been a while since they had to deal with dry conditions. The North Carolina Climate Office posted this article today describing the history of drought in the state and how to prepare for if it gets worse. Even if you are not in the Carolinas, you may find this useful since other parts of the Southeast are also rapidly drying out under a strong ridge of high pressure and temperatures much above normal this week.
