There are many impacts of a warming climate that are pretty easy to understand, such as more heat spells, longer growing seasons, and less snow in the Southeast. Here is another impact that did not occur to me–rising air pressure at higher altitudes due to the rising temperature. Outside magazine has a fascinating look at how increasing air pressure at the top of Mount Everest is making it easier for climbers to summit the mountain without the need for supplemental oxygen. Currently only about 2 percent of all climbers are able to reach the top without using bottled oxygen to climb to the summit, but in the future this may become more frequent. The article also points out that other impacts of climate change such as melting glaciers, shifting ice fields, and land or ice slides, are making the climbing more treacherous.
