The heavy rains that fell in southern Florida this past week wiped out the last remaining pocket of moderate drought in the Southeast as well as put a dent in the areas of abnormally dry conditions.
Hard to believe that just three months ago more than half the region was abnormally dry or worse, and 25% of the area was in drought. But heavy rains coming through the fall helped whittle away the dry conditions. This was true even though much of October was quite dry after the floods in South Carolina and surrounding areas early in the month. I expect the areas of abnormally dry conditions to fade away over the course of the winter as rain is expected to be above normal due to the strong El Niño.
