The latest Drought Monitor shows that while there have been very slight improvements in dry conditions in the eastern part of the region, a lot of Alabama has been designated as abnormally dry (D0). There are also a couple of small areas on the east coast of Florida. This is because most of the eastern part of the region has received rain from both Debby and subsequent rain since then, while rainfall has been much lighter and more spotty in Alabama. There will be almost no rain for the next week in most of the region except for the Florida Peninsula, so I would not be surprised to see some expansion of drought in Alabama on next week’s map, although the cooler temperatures have reduced evapotranspiration somewhat. The tropics are not active this week so there will be no help from there, although that is expected to change by the end of the month.
