With Major Hurricane Beryl now steaming west in the Atlantic Ocean towards the Caribbean, the Atlantic hurricane season is now underway with a vengeance. While it does not look like Beryl or the storm immediately behind her will affect us in the Southeast, a storm in the not-too-distant future may be more of a problem. Now is the time for cattle producers to take stock of their properties, including infrastructure, equipment, and herds, and to prepare for the strong wind, heavy rain, and other impacts that a hurricane or even a tropical storm could bring to you later this year. Here is a great story from IFAS describing what items cattle producers need to stock up on before the storm as well as actions they need to take immediately before and after the storm hits. Make sure that you have cattle, feed, and equipment out of low-lying areas so that rain does not isolate or ruin them, too.
