The latest Drought Monitor, released on Thursday this past week, shows that areas of abnormally dry (D0) conditions expanded in central Florida and in eastern North Carolina into a little bit of Virginia this week due to the lack of rain we have had along with warmer temperatures. The rapid growth of vegetation is also taking moisture out of the soil more rapidly than in winter when most things are dormant. In Puerto Rico, recent rain cut the area of moderate drought and abnormally dry conditions in half. Now just the northwest corner of the island are still in drought.
