Generation of electricity by renewable sources like solar and wind is increasing in the Southeast, but perhaps not for reasons you might expect. Yale Climate Connections reports that the biggest driver of building new solar and wind farms is economic, not regulatory. Some big companies like Facebook and Google are building new facilities in the Southeast, but are asking utilities to provide 100% renewable energy for their computer banks. The Southeast is a great place for solar energy because of ample sunshine (even though we do get quite a bit of cloud cover, like today), but less favorable for wind energy generation due to relatively low wind speeds except near the coasts and in mountainous areas.
